Digging Deep to Examine the Roots of the Glupteba UEFI Bootkit

Glupteba has been in use for more than a decade now. As it turns out, its Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) bootkit component is the reason why.

An in-depth analysis of the Glupteba UEFI bootkit identified 12 domains as indicators of compromise (IoCs).1 We used them as jump-off points for further investigation that led to the discovery of:

  • 3,612 registrant-connected domains, 838 of which turned out to be malicious
  • Three email-connected domains
  • Four additional IP addresses, all of which turned out to be associated with various threats
  • Five string-connected domains
